When I frequented the Oberoi coffee shop for breakfast meetings, I noticed the increase in hotel security, as well as the eerily quiet halls and closed chops on some floors. I found Marine Drive full of determined walkers and joggers at 5 am, and then the romantics came out at night. Bombay seemed like a cheated housewife - last year she had been let down by her protectors but still maintained a brave face. Today she has moved on. Cafe Leopold is abuzz, Colaba welcomes the tourists who had postponed their trips the year before. Her spirit shines and is growing stronger.

But again - are we truly safe?

Here is a Wall Street Journal article by Linda Blake featuring the city's Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. It may not provide an answer but sheds some light into the matter. The group says tighter security at embassies and consulates has caused al-Qaida and allied groups to shift their attention to easier targets.

An armored vehicle stands posted outside the re-opened Ritz-Carlton hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, 30 Jul 2009

Before September 11, 2001, al-Qaida made a name for itself by attacks on Western military and diplomatic targets, such as the USS Cole and the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

But the private intelligence firm STRATFOR says tough security measures implemented since the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington have forced al-Qaida and its allies to strike soft targets like hotels.

"The militants are shifting away from harder targets. As security measures are put in place at airports, we've seen a shift kind of away from aircraft to embassies. And then as embassy security was ratcheted up, we saw another shift over towards hotels. And so really there's kind of a line as security that is tightened at certain targets; it makes other targets more vulnerable to militants," said
Scott Stewart, STRATFOR's Vice President for Tactical Intelligence:
Stewart adds that the fact that hotels are now targeted says something about how al-Qaida has changed. "We really saw al-Qaida going from being 'al-Qaida the core group,' where they had a small group of highly trained professional terrorist operatives, into more of what we call 'al-Qaida the movement,' where we have these regional franchises or going towards the grassroots guys - the kind of do-it-yourself militant operative. And those people don't have the same skill level as the professional al-Qaida operatives. And so they also tend to gravitate more towards the easier targets to strike," he said.

Who will be the prosecutor?

An interesting piece from the Strategy Page:

Things That Cannot Be Said
June 30, 2009: India and Pakistan are still at odds over who will prosecute the terrorists responsible for the November 28, 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Pakistan insists on trying them, but Pakistan has a track record of going through the motions, and cutting terrorists free after things quiet down. Pakistani support for Islamic terrorism, and refusal to admit it (even though Pakistan is openly at war with Islamic terror groups) continues to be the biggest unresolved dispute between the two nations.
In the Pakistani tribal territories, the Taliban have increased their attacks on girls schools. Because so many civilians fled the fighting, many of these schools are empty and unguarded. The Taliban come in and burn them down or blow them up. This angers most of the people in the area, but the Taliban pay more attention to how much media coverage they get, than to popularity polls. While most of the Taliban have been driven out of the Swat valley, there are still some left. Hiding in the hills, they mostly operate at night against civilian targets.

Deadly Blast At Luxury Hotel in Pakistan

Breaking news from the NYT!

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -- Officials says a huge bomb has exploded at a luxury hotel in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, killing at least five people and wounding 25 others.

Police official Liaqat Ali says gunmen stormed into the Pearl Continental Hotel in the northwestern city on Tuesday night just before ''a big bomb went off.''
Sahibzada Anis, a top government official in Peshawar, says at least five people were killed and 25 wounded.

Is there a calm after the storm...?

There is very little being said about the cyclone that hit India and Bangladesh recently. The Pakistani national's charge sheet runs to 11,000 pages and is written in English and Marathi, the local language of Mumbai. Kasab was caught on camera with an AK-47 and a bag full of ammunition and grenades during the coordinated commando-style attacks on Mumbai last November, when he and an accomplice allegedly killed 58 people at Mumbai's main train station. Kasab reportedly smiled throughout the hearing and is reading Gandhi's autobiography in his cell. If convicted of murder and waging war against India, he'll face death by hanging.

This puts a very dark spin on Gandhi's famous words, "Be the change you want to see in the world." Looks like Kasab wants to see relentless death and destruction. Good thing his world is now confined to a 9x9 cell.

READ: Mumbai Gunman Laughs at Terror Charges

Good vs. Bad Taliban

Found this on the Times of India site today:

Suddenly, there is talk of two kinds of Taliban -the "good" Taliban and the "bad" Taliban. The world knows the Taliban is bad. So,
what is "good" Taliban?

According to certain strategists, in Pakistan as well as in the US, the Taliban can be broadly drawn into two categories -one, the socially ultra-conservative Islamists, who demand the rule of sharia in areas where they dominate, and, two, the global jihadis. It's being suggested that the world can do business with the former, if only to isolate and eliminate the latter, the bad ones.

Is this a valid distinction? When General Musharraf suggested that there were "moderate" Talibs, the then external affairs minister Jaswant Singh had called this an "oxymoron" - and most of the world, the West certainly, would have agreed. And yet now, when the Taliban is threatening to overrun Pakistan, there are some who are proffering the "good" Taliban theory as a key foreign policy input for the US.

What's wrong with the Indian Congress?

And why/how do we elect such people to office - who make racist, derogatory remarks?

A quote from Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari via The Hindu:

"If there is something that is happening in Pakistan, it is only Pakistan that is responsible? But to my "disappointment" I wasn't. On the contrary. The only reason why it took me 45 minutes to get out of the airport was because my luggage took a while to come out. I stood in the green channel line to get my bags checked, but I was told to just go ahead and leave. I didn't have to go through scanning of the bags or any other security check. Me including 50 other people in front of me were told to cut the line and leave.

I was honestly pretty infuriated. It was not too long after the terrorist attacks and the security was so weak anyone could have walked out of the airport with anything packed in their bags. And apparently I was not the only one noticing a lapse in security at the airports.

But, in the city center and all around Bombay I could not have felt more safe. Even though there was "Naka Bandi" - Road checks almost every 1000 meters on some days it made me feel safe. Knowing there could be terrorists still floating amongst us, so the fact that were so many cops in every corner of the city made me secure. It was an odd sight to see barricades at each an every hotel. Not too long ago we could just give our cars in valet right at the doorstep of the Taj, the Oberoi or any other hotel, now we have to leave them outside have the K9 sniff them, get frisked every time we enter any of these hotels and all other security measures.

Bombay is home and this last time I visited it was hard to see the city that is full of energy, excitement and optimism be this glum.

BOMBAY COMMUNITY PUBLIC TRUST UPDATE

From the BCPT, a non-profit that IndiaUnite supports through donations. Please stay tuned for details on our upcoming fundraiser.

Dear Friends,

As our supporter for this cause, we would like you to know how far we have progressed in our work with the affected families. A brief review of the work done so far by BCPT in this regard is given below.

Overview:
On behalf of the citizens of Mumbai, BCPT endeavored to reach out to all affected families – deceased and injured, rich and poor, Mumbaikars and those residing in other parts of the country. Since the Taj Group of Hotels, the Oberoi Group of Hotels, the Police and the NSG immediately announced to take care of their own personnel, and since other NGOs had announced their intention of supporting the victims admitted to JJ and GT hospitals, BCPT therefore concentrated on contacting 72 families of deceased victims and 80 victims who were injured as they did not fall in any of the above categories. Additionally, referrals of 11 cases given to BCPT with a request to extend support were also included in the list.

We focused on 72 families of deceased victims. Of these, we contacted 66 families but were not able to locate 6 families since some addresses were incomplete, homes were locked and phone numbers were wrong.

Of the 66 families, the families of 20 deceased victims require help. The remaining 46 families have stated that they do not require help or are receiving required support from other sources. The 20 victims have left behind

28 minor children
6 retired, dependent parents
11 widows and
1 family has lost both parents.

The families contacted by us all require support. They are going through a very difficult time and have yet to come to term with their loss. The widows are traumatized as they all have young children and now have to work out ways of caring for the family single-handedly. Most of them are housewives, so they also have to prepare themselves to step out of their houses and earn a livelihood.

A few of the deceased victims were unmarried, yet were the main bread winners of their family. In these families the dependents include old parents and siblings – small children and/or young adults.

Some of the families were living in small rented houses in low income neighborhoods. With no steady income now, they are faced with the situation of having to move out of these houses and either move in with relatives or go back to their hometowns.

One of the deceased was a taxi driver who drove a rented taxi to earn money. He is survived by his wife and two young children aged 5 and 3. They are currently in Mumbai but will go back to their village, where they do farming. He was the only earning member of the family. His father has cancer. He used to send money home to his village every month for the treatment of his father. One of his brothers is also a taxi driver in Mumbai. He has another brother who is going to come to Mumbai now to earn.

A young woman who lost her life used to work as a domestic help to support her family. She lost her life in the bomb blast at Wadi Bunder. She is survived by her husband and two young sons. Her husband sells fish from door to door for a living and does not have a fixed income. It was his wife whose monthly income was used to support their family. Her husband and children currently stay in a rented house. However, since her husband does not have a fixed income, paying rent and school fees has become difficult for him.

Of the 80 injured victims to be contacted, 7 could not be contacted because of inadequate addresses. Thus 73 victims were contacted. Of these, 62 victims do not need help or are receiving the required support from other sources. Thus presently 11 cases are under consideration. One of them is severely injured and requires educational support for his child as well as some support for his wife to compensate for loss of income to the family. The remaining victims are at present using the compensation provided by the government and/or the railways. A few of them expect that once that is exhausted they may still need support for an additional period of 2 to 4 months.

A man injured during the shooting at CST was admitted to hospital, and has not yet been discharged. Due to the nature of his injuries, he will be bed-ridden for at least six months in the hospital and a year at home. He has a wife and a four year old son. His wife used to do embroidery work at home through which she earned about Rs.4,000 a month. However, due to her husband’s injury and hospitalization, she cannot continue with the work, leading to the loss of her income. Having no income and no other relatives in Mumbai for support, she has been forced to send her son back to their village.

Commitment for support:
Keeping in view the funds received so far as donations, the details for extending support to the families of the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks has been slightly reworked as under:
· For the 29 children (28 of deceased victims and 1 of an injured victim) we commit to provide a sponsorship of Rs. 2500 per month for their education and maintenance needs for a minimum period of two years. Funds available, this commitment will be extended by one or more years. Total amount committed: Rs. 17.40 lakh. This support will be extended to a maximum of three children in a family.
· Considering the fact that six dependent old parents will need funds on a regular basis for their health and maintenance needs, it has been decided to provide them with a monthly annuity of Rs. 5000 each for a minimum period of two years. Thus we commit a sum of Rs. 7.20 lakh for a period of two years. Funds permitting, this will be extended by one or more years.
· In view of the fact that the 11 widows will all be getting support through the sponsorship of their children (either two or three), direct support for their maintenance will now be considered at a later date, funds permitting.
· For those injured victims who might require long term medical/rehabilitation support, we propose to set aside Rs. 3.00 lakh.
· In addition to general donations received, the Trust has also received amounts to be directed to a specific individual/s or group of victims e.g. Oberoi employees and the police. The Trust will honor the requests and disburse the funds as per the wishes of the donors.

Disbursements:
The process of disbursement has begun and cheques to 20 children and 3 parents (senior citizens) have been issued.

Thanks and regards,
Harsha Parekh
(Executive Trustee)

Pakistan tells investigators to wrap up Mumbai attacks investigation in 10 days

By Asif Shahzad of the Associated Press

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Investigators have 10 days to complete their inquiries into the Mumbai terror attacks, Pakistan's top Interior Ministry official said Saturday.

Rehman Malik told reporters that investigators were looking at information handed over by India and leads gathered independently. Thousands of Palestinians killed in Gaza. Kashmir. Somalia. Zimbabwe. People are dying everywhere, it is the same story. Will there every be an end to it? What will bring peace to the world or is peace an unattainable illusion? Who is to be blamed and if so why blame them? These questions haunt me all the time.

Last night, I was wondering what if India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were still one? It would have been a different place. Maybe in 100 years, it will become one again. What a notion! India, Pakistan and Bangladesh as one big nation. Hard to imagine, isn't it? We have been fighting for more than 50 years. Can you image how many lives has been lost over 50 years and still counting? The same story is reflected in the Middle East in Palestine. Imagine Palestinians and Israelis living together in peace. Why do we have so much hate for each other? Pick a place on the world map and there is something gruesome going on.

Will we ever see peace in the world? We talk about peace, we march for peace but why is there so much hate toward one another. In my opinion, peace is not attainable until we all reach a higher level of consciousness. Individually and collectively. Only if we rise above Religion, Cast, Social Status, Skin Color, Borders; let go of our identities; and see ourselves as human beings first. Only if we see ourselves as one big global family, one with the human race, and part of this planet and not separated from it. Only if we see the world's problem as our own. Only if, but can we?

I wonder what a place this world would be if we could.

Eliyas Qureshi is a Actor & Filmmaker based New York, NY.<br has formed a high-level committee to analyse the information about the November 26 Mumbai terrorist attacks that New Delhi has shared with Islamabad, Interior Adviser Rehman Malik said on Thursday.

Addressing a news conference, he said the findings of the body would be shared with the parliament and the nation.

Sources privy to the measure said FIA Additional Director General Javed Iqbal would head the committee, which would also include Special Investigations Group in-charge Khalid Qureshi and an FIA Director Liaqat Ali Khan.<br The police have started searching for the woman at the complaint of her daughter. According to the police, the woman had seen the terrorists as they got out off a boat. Aslan parses the differences (and, it turns out, there are shockingly few) between acts of war and acts of terror, in terms of motive, intent and collateral damage. The obvious argument is intent. Terrorists intend to kill civilians. Soldiers do not.

So, what about Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Cities that were leveled in mere seconds by bombs stamped USA, killing over 200,000 civilians instantly?

The US, apparently, claims the difference between soldiers and terrorists lies in matching uniforms. And : remorse. Ergo, if the "collateral damage" caused by state-sponsored acts of violence yield civilian deaths, so long as the perpetrators are wearing camouflage and offer somber apologies after the fact, they are righteous and justified in their actions.

The men who killed hundreds of civilians in Mumbai on 11/26 are terrorists. There is no justification for their brutal acts. But in this shape-shifting war on terror, maybe we can learn something by applying Aslan's arguments and trying to define clearly and unconditionally why they should be labeled terrorists as opposed to guerilla fighters or non-uniformed soldiers.

Thoughts?

READ: Reza Aslan, Which One's the Terrorist?

What should Pakistan do now?

I just read an article of Voice of America about the Pakistani militant who claims responsibility for the Mumbai attacks. He leaves behind a wife and three young children, the oldest 7 years old, and the youngest only 9 months old. They now have no source of income as Mishrilal was the only earning member of the family. His elderly parents were also dependent on him.

Ashfar Ali Sheikh was a daily wage labourer. He died of a gunshot injury. He was just 21 years old. Young and unmarried, he was working in Mumbai to support his family at home. His father is a labourer on a farm in their village. He also leaves behind four siblings. The eldest works on a farm, two others are in the 9th and 6th standard respectively and one brother is blind.

In these and similar cases we have decided to give an ad hoc grant of Rs. 2 lakh by way of a monthly income fixed deposit scheme to add to the compensation given by the government and other agencies.

We estimate that finally 25-30 families of the deceased may need support and about 50 injured persons will need medical and other support. Remember you can still light a candle for remembrance, it is never too late.

Mumbai Vigil in New York

This week has been another one of change, for the world and for me. While the terrorists attacked the Oberoi and the Taj in Mumbai, I was packing boxes, purging belongings that no longer served me. And as I was schlepping my stuff up five flights, the Indian special forces raided the Jewish Centre exterminating the remaining terrorists. Though I followed the news on NPR, I must admit that I was preoccupied with adjusting to my new environment.

Last night however, I went to a vigil for those who were killed in Mumbai, organized by Benita Singh and Shruti Ganguly. I went to pay my respects and to mourn the victims. A small group gathered at the Jivamukti studio on Union Square. Except for myself and one American who had come with his colleague, all were Indian.

We exchanged stories. One guy mentioned the power of globalization. His mother, who lives in New York, had seen what had happened in Mumbai on the news and phoned her brother there to warn him not to take his usual train. She had known before her brother what was happening in his town.

The President is Coming

There are few places in the world these days where George W. Bush is welcomed with open arms rather than projectile loafers. India is definitely a last-standing outpost of We-Heart-Bush sentiment (thanks in no small part to his giving us our nukes), and that excitement over our lame duck is captured in the new film The President is Coming, about Bush's 2006 visit to India and the fierce competition to be the representative "young Indian" to shake the presidential hand.

Among the hopefuls: a pretentious and cutting female Bengali novelist, a South Indian IITan who speaks almost exclusively in proofs, India's top accent trainer whose dream is to return to America after being unceremoniously deported several years back, a weasel-y new-money stock trader, a pro-Hindustan social worker, and a rich Delhi daddy's girl who proudly claims herself to be the Indian Paris Hilton.

The film was written by Anuvab Pal (of Loins of Punjab fame), again based on his own hit play, and is shot in the similar mockumentary, Christopher Guest style. I've had the pleasure of spending some time with Anuvab during my current sojourn in Bombay, and I've officially labeled him the Indian Ricky Gervais.

In a time when Bombay's glitterati is concerned only about their own personal safety ("oh my god, yaar, what if I had been at Harbor Bar the night of the attacks!") or the thudding sound of their pay rates falling to the floor, Anuvab is a breath of fresh air. His film serves the same function on a slightly more macro level.

It's interesting to note that The President is Coming was having it's premiere on November 26th, the night the attacks broke out. The film was halted mid-screening and the high-profile audience ushered to the safety of their gated Juhu bungalows. The release of the film was subsequently delayed until January 9th (in India only for now, but stay tuned for a US release date).

Personally, I think it was a blessing in disguise. What better time to commemorate the out-going President than during his final few days in office, when he concievably can't do any more harm. If you're in India, go see this movie on the 9th, and if not, keep a close eye out for its release.

What do we do now...

One of our readers posted this as a comment but we felt that it deserved it's own post and discussion.

-Get together with the people in your building and neighbouring buildings and form a group, because only together can we all fight this battle.
-Join the local area office of any party that you support or think will work with you(BJP/Congress/MNS/Shiv Sena etc..) in your area. Help them in whatever work they are carrying out. Try and attend all the meetings possible that they hold and make sure to voice your opinions where ever possible. Start off with doing the work they have underway and then ask them to do things you want them to.
-Visit your local area police stations and fire stations. Enquire about the safety measures they have in place there. Find out about their 'in case of emergency' drills. Politicians, college students, leaders of the Muslim community, activists, and other members of the police. And then the questions. Why does it take such an immense tragedy to unite us? Why does this sentiment snuff out seconds after the occasion? What is it in our DNA that allows leaders to walk into our rooms, rape us, leave and come back again when the need arises?

This is the greatest psychological blow that the city has received. People say the country, but I disagree. The fall of the Babri Masjid and the Gujarat riots have left deeper wounds. But as far as Bombay is concerned, 60 hours of television have brought the beginning, middle and end of this tragedy into our living rooms. We have seen guns, shoot-outs, murders, fires, commandos, traumatised survivors and destruction of every kind. And so have our children. My belief still remains that the practical effect of the attacks will be less than the effect that the 1993 and 2006 bombings had on the common Bombayite. Then it was a direct connection to fear: “Should I go back to work in Zaveri Bazaar? “Should I send my children on the trains tomorrow?” Now those fears are more general — anything can happen in this city, be careful. The psyche of Bombay will take a generation to recover.

Disaster Tourism

I couldn't help myself. Today, while strolling in Colaba in search of a new pair of shoes, I stopped in at the Cafe Leopold for a fresh lime soda and a macabre look at the remnants left behind by the terrorists who shot up the place on November 26th.

Imagine my disappointment when the place seemed business-as-usual. The square tables were packed with locals and firangis, drinking beer and chowing down on veg Manchurian. No extra security protected its doors. No somber tone amongst the waitstaff or the patrons. No heaps of flowers lay where bodies might have slumped a couple of weeks ago.

Except for five easy-to-miss bullet holes in the glass and a sudden run on Cafe Leopold t-shirts, not much has changed at the hangout, which reopened its doors less than 48 hours after the start of the attacks, while the terrorists that had shot it up were still sending sprays of gunfire throughout the Taj hotel, a couple of blocks away.

A European couple at an adjacent table shared my disappointment. "It's like nothing happened," one said glumly to the other. They resigned themselves to taking a photo of a bullet hole in the glass panel and buying a t-shirt before going off in search of a venue with a better sense of post traumatic stress.

I watched, bemused, as I sucked down the last of my soda. Welcome to Mumbai, I wanted to tell them, where yesterday's disaster is today's opportunity for entrepreneurship. Instead, I bought a t-shirt, too.

Where in the World is Arundhati Roy?

While jogging today I realized something. By now, every two-bit politician, actor, police chief, even yours truly has gone on television and radio to give our two cents about the recent Mumbai terror attacks. But why haven't we heard from India's Dissident Laureate, the anti-corporatist, anti-colonialist, anti-everything Arundhati Roy?

Fear not, dear readers. We looked under every soap box in the land and found the following reactions from Ms. Roy. I warn you, in true Roy fashion, the author picks quite a few fights with her views (just read the comments posted below the video), but I have to say I'm leaning more towards her judgment than Sukhetu Mehta's call for us to retaliate to the attacks by spending more money at the Oberoi Shopping Arcade (for those of you who favor Mr. Mehta's approach, the Arcade reopened this week).

LISTEN: "India has become a more cruel country."
(Start at around minute 2:45)

INDIAN CELEBS SPEAKS OUT AGAINST THE ATTACKS

Shah Rukh, Preity, Sachin, Aamir, Priyanka...these are a few familiar and famous Indians featured in this PSA.

Check it out and let us know what you think.

Personally, I was quite distracted by the dramatic music in the background, which I thought took away from the piece quite significantly.

Lord of the Flies

I just saw this article in the Huffington Post (see below. Riot police responded with tear gas while the fire department rushed to extinguish blazes. They wore white. They lit candles. They signed petitions. They sang "Vande Mataram." And then, the added "Pakistan besharam." Or, "Shame on you, Pakistan."

As the march surged forward from the Gateway of India to the now-infamous landmarks of 11/26, the riot calls became more and more violent. "Shame on you, Pakistan" soon became "Kill Pakistan," "Declare War on Pakistan," and even worse.

This is what happens at a peace march? Calls for violence and songs of hatred? Were all those white candles glowing to commemorate those who died last week, or those that would die if India and Pakistan went to war? Or, more immediately, if religious divisiveness led to riots in the streets of Bombay?

Though most people (rightfully) directed their anger at the corrupt and insensitive politicians, a large and vocal minority used a peace march to spew hatred for an entire nation and it's people. Amita's cousin Rita and Rita's husband Sanjay were killed by terrorists at the Oberoi Hotel. In trying to make sense of her loss and honor her cousins lives, Amita wrote a touching piece for CNN's iReport describing the feeling of frantically waiting days to hear whether your loved ones are dead or alive, and dealing with the tragic news.

Amita, thanks for sharing this moving tribute with us. We will keep Rita and Sanjay in our prayers, and remember that politics and finger-pointing will never be as important as remembering the loved ones we lost.

READ: Amita Jivrajka Ramesh's tribute to "Gudu"

Mumbai Attacks Hit Home For Young South Asian Americans

A few of us were recently interviewed by the New America Media - here is an excerpt from the interview. Click here to see the full interview.

Living here in the United States, do you feel detached from violence in India?

Urvi Nagrani, 21, Student, UCSB, Santa Barbara, CA
Maybe I'd be able to feel detached if I lacked personal ties to the situation, but I've been to all of the sites that were attacked, I have family members who live very close to all the sites. I was unable to enjoy the luxury of apathy.

Shima Khan, 24, High School Teacher, Austin, TX
I'm definitely upset with what has happened. Clearly, there was an internal glitch as well. Why wasn't security tightened after the 2006 blasts?

Shivani Mehta, 28, Fashion Designer, New York, NY
Bombay is so fresh in my mind. When they attack the train stations, they were attacking working class. When they attacked temples, they were attacking the middle class. Now they attacked the Taj and Oberoi, so they're targeting the upper class.

Taz Ahmed
Since I'm the only Muslim blogger on Sepia Mutiny, I didn't want to post anything because I knew there would be a bunch of attacks against me. I primarily identify as South Asian American, but I think situations like these literally force my Muslim identity to be brought out.

Yagnesh Vadgama

When I was in India, I would hang out at Leopold Café because my Marathi and Hindi aren't great and people spoke English there. When I heard Leopold got attacked, that news hit me really hard. And when I heard the train got attacked as well, that news hit me hard, too. I never had a personal driver when I was in India and I only took local transportation like the train. I felt this wave of burnt out disappointment and exhaustion from these acts of violence constantly happening. It hurt even more this time because the memories of these attacked landmarks kept replaying in my mind.

Muffadal Saylawala

The American media kept mentioning that India suspected the source of the attacks to be from an "external force", which is a code name for Pakistan. I watched the Pakistani news channel and they showed footage of complete chaos in Pakistan, with troops assembling in Kashmir. India and Pakistan were supposedly going to strengthen peaceful relations at this very historic time, potentially ending 60 years of strife and suffering. And it all fell apart in two days.

CALLING ALL PAKISTANIS

An article from Thomas L. Friedman:

On Feb. 6, 2006, three Pakistanis died in Peshawar and Lahore during violent street protests against Danish cartoons that had satirized the Prophet Muhammad. More such mass protests followed weeks later. When Pakistanis and other Muslims are willing to take to the streets, even suffer death, to protest an insulting cartoon published in Denmark, is it fair to ask: Who in the Muslim world, who in Pakistan, is ready to take to the streets to protest the mass murders of real people, not cartoon characters, right next door in Mumbai?

After all, if 10 young Indians from a splinter wing of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party traveled by boat to Pakistan, shot up two hotels in Karachi and the central train station, killed at least 173 people, and then, for good measure, murdered the imam and his wife at a Saudi-financed mosque while they were cradling their 2-year-old son — purely because they were Sunni Muslims — where would we be today? The entire Muslim world would be aflame and in the streets.

ANOTHER TYPE OF...PROOF

I just saw this article on NDTV's website, which was pretty upsetting.

Faulty jackets killed Mumbai bravehearts

Several innocent lives were lost in the Mumbai terror attacks and 14 of them were policemen, including Anti-Terror Squad chief Hemant Karkare, who were killed in the line of duty.

However, now investigations have revealed that some lives could have been saved if the police had been better equipped.

The question that has come up is that did out of date bulletproof jackets fail to protect the lives of Mumbai's cops as they took on terrorists?

NDTV tried to investigate why the outdated jackets hadn't been updated. A shocking fact uncovered that even with something as life saving as bulletproof jackets, there has been corruption.

Our tax rupees need to go towards protecting our forces - How can we, this booming nation, on the verge of supposedly upgrading from the third world, not be able to afford bulletproof jackets for our police officers?!

MUST READ: Why They Do It

I just came across this extremely enlightening post on the New Yorker's Think Tank blog, written by Steve Coll. Steve spent time with senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (the group allegedly responsible for last week's attacks in Mumbai) officials, and even took a tour with their charity arm, Jamat-ud-Dawa. Charity arm of a terrorist group?? Yep, that's right, and they're not just providing free arms training, either. According to Steve, Jamat sets up hospitals, schools and provides earthquake relief in the most remote regions of Pakistan. The Pakistani government, though they denounce LeT, support Jamat. The US government says Jamat is just a front for LeT. That may be the case, but Jamat is still the one delivering aid to Pakistan's most needy.

So, based on this information where can we assume the loyalty of these needy folks lies? Buy expensive stuff, or the terrorists have won. Eat in fancy restaurants, or the terrorists have won. Sleep in over-priced hotels, or the terrorists have won. So, we drain our bank accounts on useless crap and--we win?

I get the idea that fear tactics shouldn't break our spirit, yadda yadda, but how has courage suddenly been equated with consumerism?

The terrorists, and, to a less violent degree, the disenfranchised people they claim to represent, take issue with our free-market, unabashedly consumptive lifestyle. But maybe they don't just begrudge us our Louis Vuittons simply out of evil.

As Sameer Reddy points out in his fantastic piece for Newsweek, the deep divide between rich and poor in India (with most of the country's Muslims leaning heavily towards the poor side) is a petrie dish that grows resentment like bacteria. And resentment taken to a bloody extreme leads to violence, such as the kind we experienced last week. So maybe, instead of trying to defeat terrorism by frenetically swiping our credit cards, we could think more about how to close the gap between the have and the have nots, giving more people access to opportunity and bring them into the fold of society? Sure, it may cost us a pair of Jimmy Choos here or a summer home there, but isn't the prospect of world peace worth it?

Read: The Two Faces of India, by Sameer Reddy

INDIA VS. They enter near the taxi stand, where long lines of battered black and yellow cabs wait for fares. One wears khaki cargo pants and a blue T-shirt. A pair of small knapsacks are slung over a shoulder. He looks like a college kid.

They are, says a photographer who follows them on part of their grim journey, "backpackers with assault rifles."
The two — and other death squads working in pairs — are to wreak carnage in landmark after landmark across Mumbai over the next three days, creating panic in this normally unflappable city and killing more than 195 people.

Sebastian D'Souza hears the gunfire at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus from his office across the street at the Mumbai Mirror tabloid.

He follows the sound through the sprawling station, slipping unseen through parked trains. When he first catches sight of the young men, he doesn't realize they are the gunmen. They look so innocent. Then he sees them shooting.

"They were firing from their hips. Very professional. Very cool," says D'Souza, the newspaper's photo editor. For more than 45 minutes he follows as they move from platform to platform shooting and throwing grenades. Often, D'Souza isn't even 30 feet away. The few police at the station are either dead, in hiding or had long fled.

There are billboards everywhere, signs of India's economic boom. At one point, he photographs them standing beneath a tea company sign. They appear to be having a calm conversation. My poor great bleeding heart of a city. Why do they go after Mumbai? There’s something about this island-state that appalls religious extremists, Hindus and Muslims alike. Perhaps because Mumbai stands for lucre, profane dreams and an indiscriminate openness.

Mumbai is all about dhandha, or transaction. From the street food vendor squatting on a sidewalk, fiercely guarding his little business, to the tycoons and their dreams of acquiring Hollywood, this city understands money and has no guilt about the getting and spending of it. I once asked a Muslim man living in a shack without indoor plumbing what kept him in the city. “Mumbai is a golden songbird,” he said. It flies quick and sly, and you’ll have to work hard to catch it, but if you do, a fabulous fortune will open up for you. The executives who congregated in the Taj Mahal hotel were chasing this golden songbird. The terrorists want to kill the songbird.

SURVIVOR STORIES

I watched this segment on CNN yesterday and was amazed at the strength of Jonathan Ehrlich. Please click here to see his story - how he didn't open the door that evening when he was going to bed, and was unaware that there were terrorists in his hotel...how he would still come back to India...and the importance of family.

Share what you have seen and heard from these brave and lucky men, women and children.

THE POLITICS OF THE EVENT

Has Mumbai become a pawn in a larger political chess game? Of the 2-3 terrorists that remained holed up and firing from the Taj Ballroom, one has been shot and killed, the other two, presumably, are in custody. A fire rages in the Taj heritage building, a 105-year-old, mostly wooden structure. Doesn't seem likely that much of this historic building will be salvaged.

Though the hotspots of violence over the past 57 hours have come under control (the Oberoi/Trident, the Nariman House and the Taj), there is no information being given about who, why or how this happened. Mumbaikars are still paralyzed with fear and staying indoors because we don't know how many more of these guys are at large.

For those of us who have been glued to the news the past few days, this leads to some questions: when are we going to find out the motives behind this atrocious act of terrorism? Sure, we can speculate that radical Islam is behind it, but isn't that kind of speculation dangerous in a city occupied by both Hindus and Muslims, still scarred from years of riots, bombings and social tension?

I'm wondering why we aren't seeing more talking heads on the news networks helping put all of this in perspective. Where are the retired Army commanders explaining why an operation like this has taken 57 hours to complete? Where are the terrorism experts doling out plausible suspects and their motives? Where are the hospital officials telling us the extent of physical trauma endured by the hostages and other victims? Where are the intelligence updates indicating whether or not we should fear stepping out into the city again?

In America, we often chide these talking heads for spouting useless, speculative commentary, but now I'm beginning to realize how valuable it can be, especially when coming from informed experts and reliable, non-sensationalistic sources. They help answer the questions foremost on our minds. They help us put these disturbing images in perspective. They help us plan for tomorrow.

Thoughts?

-S

VANDE MATARAM

When you need that little ray, the light of India Shining, remember this song and remember that we are all in this together.

THE ATTACKS - A FIRST PERSON ACCOUNT

IndiaUnite co-founder Smriti Mundhra wrote this piece for the New York Daily News - a first person account of the attacks, as she was trapped in her apartment by the Oberoi:

It is Night Two of urban captivity, and I'm getting restless.

I carefully bypass my sleeping parents and sneak up onto our rooftop terrace to breathe in some fresh air, which I desperately need after being trapped indoors for the last thirty six hours.

There, I have a birds-eye view of the action on the streets of South Bombay below.

What I see looks pretty familiar - but feels eerily different.

The streets and alleys are empty - not unusual at two in the morning - but sirens ring where music may normally drifted up from a nearby late-night hookah cafe.
